Howard chanters have a highly developed bore with perturbations that give excellent tuning between the octaves up to the 3rd D. The front of the chanter is thinned to reduce the "chimney height" of certain tone holes. This further enhances tuning to the back D and front holes. The semitone system also gives good tuning in both octaves. The key_work was developed so as to be easily played at speed and its unique design allows for both right and left hand playing at speed (fast dance tunes can be played) The bottom of the chanter has either an iris fitted as standard or a popping valve with an iris incorporated can be fitted at extra cost. The tuning is un-tempered to blend in with drones. The playing pressure is well balanced between the octaves. You don't have to squeeze the bag hard to get upper notes of the 2nd octave. This makes the drones steadier and regulator playing is relatively easy in the 2nd octave. The chanter is easily reeded to give variations in tone,volume and playing pressure. Replacement reeds can be supplied by post without the chanter being returned.
