Howard Reeds

Howard reeds have been developed over more than 30 years. The reed is the heart of the music, no reed and the music is dead. Although Howard reeds are made to play in Howard chanters some of our reed customers play other makes of chanter and find them more than satisfactory. There is no need to send the chanter

Reed-making Equipment

The classical music folk have had the luxury of being able to purchase their reed-making requisites in semifinished form. Now the Uilleann reedmaker can do the same. After extensive research and tool development we can offer the following items.

We supply cane in the stick, pre-gouged, gouged and "Ready Tie"

The stick is a selected Catalonian cane tube approximately 25mm (1 inch) in diameter. It has been cut to length to save on postage.

The pre-gouged cane has been split and cut down to a "D" cross section, cut to length and a centre line marked for later cutting in half.

The gouged cane is gouged to a thickness and radius that has proved to work for me over a long period of time.

The "ready tie", as the name implies, is a slip of cane that is ready to be cut in half and tied in to the staple. The cane has been gouged, shaped (the tails cut on), and profiled (the scrape cut). When it is tied onto the staple it is just beginning to "crow" and needs little sanding to finish the scrape.
